Growing up in a southern black family, Easter Day was something I always looked forward to! When EVERYONE showed up for church and EVERYONE showed up at grandma’s house for Easter dinner and the family easter egg hunt! Back then one of the main reasons I couldn’t wait til easter week was because that Saturday night before Easter Day, I would get to help my grandma prepare the food and the eggs for the easter egg hunt! I also got to eat a lot of food! Then after all that preparing, Sunday would come and everyone would eat and take everything! I mean there was nothing for the dogs to even taste! It never failed I would be like dang, y'all don’t even know the work that went into this! I barely remember ever doing any easter speeches, yet I do remember being in high school and having to do a praise dance for the easter program. (super uncomfortable because I am not a dancer) I missed my hangout time with my grandma that year because we had praise dance practice and I was upset! It was at this practice that I finally listened to the words of the song that we were dancing to “ They Didn’t Know” by Kurt Carr.
And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
And they cast lots to divide his garments.
Sis, did you know that Jesus recognized the blindness of His enemies in this prayer to God? Did you know that those enemies are me and you? That while Jesus was hanging on a cross he found the strength to pray for us. Even as his blood steamed down and that becoming the atonement for our sins Jesus made intercession for those who transgressed against him. In this, Jesus fulfilled his own command to love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good for those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.(Matt 5:44) In the words of the song, they hung him high, and stretched him wide, they nailed his hands and feet, and pierced him in the side. They didn't know! Look at my savior hanging there suffering, bleeding, dying for me and you.
You need to see this, sis we all need to see this! We need to hear these words and know that Jesus has always been for us even when we weren’t for him or ourselves. This Easter see your sin, feel the guilt, enjoy the fam and the food. One thing I beg of you to not do is to let this week end and you haven’t looked at the cross and rested in this prayer! He bowed his head, hung his head and He died. Jesus bowed his head, hung his head, and He died so that we could be forgiven and before his soul left he didn’t forget to make sure that God knew. Father forgive them for they know not what they do!
Let’s pray sis: Jesus thank you that even in suffering you think of us. That the will of God is ever present in your heart. Lord this week help us to meditate on your words and your truth. Help us to see the hope in your prayer for us. Help us to walk in your light, and your path! In Jesus Name Amen.
