Growing up I would always wonder what’s so “good” about Good Friday?!
Yes, of course we got two days out of school, got to sleep in and play all day ,my mom would even go to the store and buy my favorite foods(with snacks added). Family and friends would be in town and it would just be a fun filled day of laughter and love! Yet, at an early age I understood that a Man died on this day in which we call good. I just couldn’t comprehend why this would be a good thing. That this death was so good that schools closed, jobs stopped, families gathered and people watched. A question that we wreck my mind for years , why is this Friday Good?!
After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Sis, words can change everything! Yes, to a marriage proposal changes things, goodbye changes things. One word in a friendship can make or break it! Yet, there is no greater phrase that has changed lives in the way “It is Finished” the words Jesus uttered before He hang His head and died has. These are the most impactful words in history! There was a point before Jesus died, before the veil was torn in two, that an amazing spiritual transaction took place. God the Father placed upon God the Son all the guilt and wrath our sin deserved, and He bore it in Himself perfectly and completely, totally satisfying the wrath of God for us! It is finished! These words were the cry of a winner!
“It was a Conqueror’s cry; it was uttered with a loud voice.
There is nothing of anguish about it, there is no wailing in it.
It is the cry of One who has completed a tremendous labor.” (Spurgeon)
Jesus had finished the eternal purpose of the cross. It stands today as a finished work, the cornerstone of all Christian peace and faith, paying in full the debt we righteously owed to God and making peace between God and man. Sis, Friday is good because “It is Finished!” All that we seek to be and become, that in which we seek to achieve and fall short of. The sin that clings so tightly to us that it leaves us at the feet of Jesus. To be known and loved as beautiful melanin beings Sis it is finished and Friday is Good because God is Good all the time and all the time God is Good!
Sis Let’s Pray: Jesus help to see that it is finished! That we are working from victory not to victory! Let’s rest in the completed work of Christ. Allow that too motivate us to look to Jesus and finish all that Christ has commanded with love and truth! Amen!
